Practice exams were not the gap. Good explanations were.
Practice exams for New Zealand pilots have been around for years, and some of them are good. What was harder to find was one that treated the wrong answer as the useful part: not just which option was correct, but why, with the rule or syllabus reference to go and read, so that a missed question turns into a page of revision rather than a shrug.
The Flying Kiwi was built around that de-brief. Everything else follows from it: full-length exams so the de-brief covers a whole sitting, a fresh draw every time so you cannot learn the paper instead of the subject, and a price per exam low enough that sitting it again is the obvious next step.
Four things. None of them a subscription.
- RealisticIt behaves like the exam you are about to sit: the same question count, the same time limit, options shuffled, and a fresh draw every time you launch.
- DetailedA score tells you where you stand. The de-brief tells you why: for every wrong answer, what you chose, the correct answer, the reasoning and the syllabus reference to revise. After a paid exam it is emailed to you.
- Affordable$5.99 for a PPL exam and $9.99 for a CPL exam, less in bundles, with no subscription and no account. Unused codes never expire, so you buy when it suits and sit when you are ready.
- IndependentA study aid written to the CAA syllabus. Not affiliated with the CAA, Aspeq or any flight school, not a substitute for instruction, and the questions and explanations are our own.
Written, drawn, marked.
AC61-3 for the PPL and AC61-5 for the CPL. Every question carries the code of the syllabus item it tests, the same numbering as the Knowledge Deficiency Report you get after a real sitting, and the CPL bank covers every item at least once.
The server picks the questions the moment you launch and shuffles the options, so no two sittings are the same and there is nothing to memorise. Question counts and time limits match the Aspeq exam for each subject.
Score and pass or fail on screen the moment you submit, then the de-brief: every wrong answer with the option you chose, the correct one, the reasoning and the syllabus reference. After a paid exam it is emailed to you as well.
Independent, and clear about it.
The Flying Kiwi is an independent educational tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand, Aspeq, or any flight training organisation, and it is not a substitute for ground instruction or for the current Rules and AIP. Regulations change; if a question and a current document disagree, the document wins, and we want to hear about it.
Questions, corrections, ideas: support@theflyingkiwi.co.nz. A person replies, usually within 24 hours.
Every subject has its own page: what the exam covers, where the marks are lost, how to prepare, and three questions from the bank with the reasoning.
